Lifting Your Ride – Why Or Why Not?

The most obvious reason to lift your ride is to gain better ground clearance so you can take on increasingly challenging off-road terrains.

Lifting your vehicle can be done through different kinds of modifications; some are as simple as replacing your tires to larger ones while others require more complex modifications like changing the suspension system and changing the car’s bodywork.

Before getting a modification, make sure that you’re ready for the consequences. Modification will not only affect the vehicle’s physical appearance, it will also change the feel of the vehicle-how you drive it. For those looking to lift their ride just for the style of it, be aware of the safety precautions that go with vehicle modifications. While lifting your ride may look rad, it also increases your vehicle’s center of gravity, and therefore affects its stability. The higher the car, the less stable it becomes and can tip over more easily. Thus, if you’re one to enjoy high-speed driving in highways, you might want to think twice about lifting your ride because with a lifted ride, you’ll have to drive more carefully. One sharp turn can cause your ride to tip over and endanger your and other people’s safety. Increasing your vehicle’s height also alters your perspective because you sit higher from the ground. Obstacles on the road may be less visible to you, especially since your bumper (which has consequently increased in height) will be blocking your view.

Lastly, increasing your vehicle’s height may affect your ride’s overall weight. Most likely, it will also increase in weight. This means more drag and slows down your vehicle all the more. If you’re simply going to cruise paved streets, lifting your ride is not such a good idea. But if you’re thinking about getting more off-road adventure then lifting your ride could be a wise choice.

As pointed out earlier, increasing your vehicle’s height will improve ground clearance. This means that it will be easier for your vehicle to go through uneven terrains such as rocks, mud, sand, gravel, and other such landscapes. The fun and challenge of off-road driving is being able to go through these obstacles. Oftentimes, speed can be compromise because what is more important is traction and clearance.

In slow-speed rock crawling for example, it is like rock climbing but with the extra challenge of being in a vehicle. In rock climbing, the speed is not really the point. Getting to your destination is. The process of getting there is the adventure and the high. Depending on your skill level and the type of off-road driving you want to do, you can modify your vehicle accordingly.

For beginners, increasing your height can be done simply by replacing your stock tires to larger ones, usually one or two sizes larger. Most vehicles will need a suspension lift kit to make this possible. If you have experience in automotive mechanics, then you can install the suspension lift kit on your own.
